Super Bowl Cupcakes 1

This year, for the first time, I’m kind of into the whole Super Bowl thing. It helps that I live in Seattle, home of the Seahawks. The whole city is insanely excited about “us” being in the Super Bowl this year, and it’s difficult not to get at least a little caught up in that.

Naturally, my way of celebrating? Baking something.

I started out with chocolate cupcakes, because of course a football field is made of dirt. I took a risk and tried a chocolate cake recipe I’d tried – and somehow ruined – previously. The recipe is from my trusty Better Homes and Gardens cookbook (it’s quickly become my favorite cookbook and my first go-to for new recipes). I still don’t know what I did wrong last time, but this time everything came together nicely. After a little batter taste test, I added a bit of cocoa powder to give it a smidge more chocolateyness, and then it was into the Seahawks-blue baking cups.

Next up: frosting. I made green buttercream frosting (it’s kind of light now, but buttercream colors often darken over a few hours. I just don’t have the patience to wait for photos) and used my new Wilton tip #233, advertised for use in creating “grass or fur.” I quickly realized I had absolutely zero patience for piping each blob of sod, and went for an abstract “grassy” effect.

A few days ago, I made chocolate footballs using Wilton candy melts in chocolate and vanilla, a small (clean!) paintbrush, a toothpick, this candy mold, and a LOT of patience. I made a few white ones with blue laces because I know people who don’t like chocolate (I know, weird). I also used yellow candy melts and a squeeze bottle to draw little goal posts on wax paper. They’re pretty funky-looking, but they get the idea across, I guess.

Then out of nowhere today, I decided I needed – no, NEEDED!! – to make Seahawks-colored footballs. Of course. So when I went to get my new decorating tip, I snagged a couple bags of candy melts in royal blue and bright green. Honestly I was surprised they had any left! It was back to work on making footballs…

So there you have it: football-themed cupcakes, many of which had the additional honor of being decorated with Seahawks footballs. GO HAWKS!

(For actual game day, there will be a cake… get excited, ’cause there will be pictures!)

You are far above and beyond anything I have ever taught you! Granny would be amazed and so would Grandma D if she ever got on a computer and looked at these yummies that you are baking and creating 🙂 WOW!!! I need some candy-making lessons, girlie! Everything looks so good – it will be a great Super Bowl Party and I hope Seattle Seahawks WIN 🙂
