Pie + Cake = Pake!

I wish I could say I came up with this idea myself, but I’m just not that creative. This is where I confess my guilty pleasure TV show: Drop Dead Diva. Yes, it’s on Lifetime, and it’s cheesy, and the good guys always win, and it’s wildly and openly emotionally manipulative, and the acting isn’t even that great… but don’t judge me! I’m hooked anyway.

On the show there is a girl who likes baking, but one day distractedly combines recipes for pie and cake. The result is a cake in a pie crust, which she dubs a “pake.” Limited on time, I used store-bought pie crust and a box of cake mix, but I did have to look up instructions. Pies and cakes bake at different temperatures and for different times, so it’s a smidge complicated. Luckily, the creators of the show anticipated their viewers would want to try this, so they posted instructions on their blog. Yay!

Now that all the store-bought parts are out of the way, I did make my own buttercream frosting. Mmm. I didn’t make it quite thick enough – I still struggle with getting it juuuust right, and I was in a hurry. I did all this on a work night, after getting home quite a bit later than usual, so I decided to forgive myself for having “imperfect” frosting. In this case, it worked out just fine anyway. I poured the frosting onto the pake and spread it just a little, and the pie crust kept it all contained! Perfect after all. It’s creeping up on Christmas so I went festive with my colors; unfortunately, I ended up with pink instead of red. Oops… I need to stop rushing!

The pakes were a hit at the office, in no small part, I’m sure, to how fun it is to say “pake!”
